Twenty Seventeen in Film

These are all the films, movies and flicks that I saw in 2017 that were released (or widely released) in 2017. It should go without saying that these are my personal opinions, so don't bother getting up-in-arms over it: you go ahead and like what you like and I'll do the same.

I can't believe I saw 47 of this year's movies and there were still so many I missed! If 2018 has half as many wonderful movies in store for us, I'll feel like a very lucky filmgoer indeed.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

Hercule Poirot is my spirit animal heading into 2018.

GET OUT

The best, most confident and clever directorial debut in horror in a long time.

THE SHAPE OF WATER

Pure cinematic magic.

ATOMIC BLONDE

Lorraine Broughton is the heroine we deserve.

IT

Not so unfilmable after all!

STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII: THE LAST JEDI

The punk rock Star Wars.

WONDER WOMAN

An excellent film that really understands its character's importance.

ANNABELLE: CREATION

I enjoyed this so much and never saw the next thing coming.

JOHN WICK 2

This is how you sequel.

THE BIG SICK

Charming and lovely and imperfect and real.

BABY DRIVER

The fun in this one goes to 11.

GERALD'S GAME

Perfectly paced and performed.

THOR RAGNAROK

Big, dumb fun and giddily dirty!

I DON'T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE

Great and sympathetic characters in a unusual set-up.

FREE FIRE

Uncomplicated fun.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

The smartest, most streamlined of the Marvel origin stories and featuring their most fully realized villain yet.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

I said this before, but: Daddy issues have never been this fun!

THE BLACKCOAT'S DAUGHTER

 Beautiful, bleak and bloody.

COLOSSAL

Truly unique.

RAW

Profoundly discomforting in the best way.

VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS

A junk drawer of fun and adventure but with some stale performances.

THE DARK TOWER

Not what I was hoping for but not as bad as you've heard.

THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER

An incredible slow burn of tension and nightmare logic.

THE WHEELMAN

Solid crime story with believable action, consequences and stakes.

THE DEVIL'S CANDY

Surprisingly fun but with too much CG fire.

DEATH NOTE

A solid adaptation with just enough of Adam Wingard's flair to stand out.

mother!

A singular experience, some of which works incredibly well for me.

ROMAN J. ISRAEL ESQ.

Amazing character study that I wish had just a little more...something.

THE BAD BATCH

Oddly relaxing and meditative for a cannibal western in a semi-psychedelic dystopia.

JIM & ANDY: THE GREAT BEYOND

A wild ride that might make some folks think about the nature of identity.

ROUGH NIGHT

The most enjoyable version of the "we accidentally killed a stripper" plot I've seen.

POTTERSVILLE

A wholesome holiday film with a dirty streak and a skeptical heart.

SPLIT

Good low budget thrills but I got distracted by some odd choices.

LOGAN LUCKY

Some fun performances wrapped in a decent heist.

OKJA

Confidently made and important, but too dark for me to want to rewatch soon.

THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS

Great world building but it let me down with a muddled message

WHAT HAPPENED TO MONDAY?

Cool concept but a little mismanaged.

BEAUTY & THE BEAST

There's nothing wrong with this, I just don't see why we needed it.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Drink when they say "motherbox".

THE BABYSITTER

Throwback horror that has an opportunity to learn from the mistakes of earlier eras and chooses not to.

LITTLE EVIL

Never quite hit its stride for me.

BRIGHT

Great effects makeup but the story feels like a first draft.

WAR MACHINE

A couple standout performances but overall, I enjoyed The Men Who Stare at Goats more.

XX

A mixed bag.

BOSS BABY

I had hoped we were done with the "it doesn't have to make sense; it's for kids" mentality.

KINGSMAN 2: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

I was as pleasantly surprised by the first Kingsman as I was disappointed by the second.

EL CAMINO CHRISTMAS

This doesn't know what kind of movie it wants to be, BUT Vincent D'Onofrio is having a blast!

How many on my list did you see? What does your list look like?

Cheers to you and yours and I hope the new year is filled with all the movies you wanna see!
